Ariel lived in a magnificent underwater kingdom with her father the sea king and six older sisters. Her long red hair flowed around her as she swam through colorful coral gardens. Unlike her sisters, Ariel was endlessly curious about the world above the waves. She collected human treasures that sank to the ocean floor, wondering about their purpose.

The Underwater Kingdom

On her fifteenth birthday, Ariel was finally allowed to swim to the surface. Her heart raced as she broke through the waves and saw stars twinkling in the night sky. On a passing ship, she spotted a handsome prince celebrating his birthday. When a sudden storm sank the ship, Ariel rescued the unconscious prince and brought him safely to shore.

The Surface World

Ariel fell in love with the prince and longed to join his world. She visited the sea witch who offered her legs in exchange for her voice. The transformation was painful, but Ariel's determination was stronger. Though the prince befriended her, his heart belonged to the temple girl who had found him on the shore.

A Difficult Choice

When Ariel discovered the temple girl was the prince's true love, her heart broke. Rather than harm the prince, she accepted her fate with grace. As dawn broke, Ariel transformed into a daughter of air instead of sea foam. Her kindness had earned her a chance to gain an eternal soul through good deeds.

The Little Mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her father the sea king; her grandmother; and her six older sisters, each born one year apart. When a mermaid turns 15, she is allowed to swim to the surface to watch the world above, and as the sisters become old enough, one of them visits the surface every year. As each of them returns, the Little Mermaid listens longingly to their various descriptions of the surface and of human beings.
e Little Mermaid is beginning to take the temple girl's place in his heart. It turns out that the princess is the temple girl, who had been sent to the temple to be educated. The prince loves her and the wedding is announced.
The Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his bride and, as dawn breaks, throws herself into the sea. Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warmth of the sun; she has turned into a spirit, a daughter of the air. The other daughters of the air tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to gain an eternal soul. She will earn her own soul by doing good deeds, and she will eventually rise up into the kingdom of God.
